MTRAS Balloon 1

MTRAS 1st High Altitude Balloon went to 109,420ft above the ground

We had 4 cameras
  • Go Pro 1 camera
  • 2 small key-chain cameras with 2GB memory cards
  • a 5.8GHz camera-transmitter
We had 2 transmitters
  • 144.39MHz APRS Trackuino
  • 146.58MHz tone on FM CW beacon
Science we were looking for
  • Multi-Balloon (cluster balloon) economies of scale to get more altitude with less cost.
Forces at Lift (Work)
Payload and Cameras on pipe frame predicted(closely measured) = 1.3595kg +/-
dividing the load on 2 balloons and sub filling each had a target of 1.2kg
Actual fill was to 1.28kg with fill tube = 1.458kg filled each balloon
So our balloons were overfilled to be a co-lift (cluster) balloon flight 1.08Lift/Load each and overall 2.14 Lift/Load ratio with 1500gram balloons
